Willy D
College Park has a reputation. Rowdy, rough, at times, cruel, but at the same time, crazy fun. Yes, it’s a college town, but not in a typical sense. It feels lost somewhere almost directly in between a big East Coast city, and non-descript suburb. College Park has at times been referred to by outsiders as “College Spark,” a derogatory poke at fires set at riots on Route 1 after big wins. The town can be a bit dramatic, there are moments of bliss and there are moments of ever-present danger. And everyone knows it, so even the smallest wins are a reason to celebrate.

21-year old performing artist Willy D re-appropriates the term “College Spark” into a fist-pumping triumph with his eponymous debut mixtape. It’s college rap, but it’s not all about partying; it’s about trying to figure life out in the 2018 college environment. Of course, partying happens, and when it does, it’s a blast, but it’s not taken for granted. The “College Spark” mixtape embodies College Park’s special brand of ennui-spiked-with-enthusiasm in a new light. One that ultimately feels optimistic and fresh.

Willy D has been surrounded by music at a young age, and started playing piano at the age of 10. It wasn’t until the summer of 2015 that he began to find a way to express himself with his own sound with the help of his producer, asiagod. Both UMD undergrads, the two worked together at late hours, often slipping out of social events and parties, to pull together beats and lyrics in an almost stream-of-consciousness fashion.

The release of “College Spark” has been turning heads with its diversity of sounds and genre-hopping. At the live performances, which thus far happen in random College Park basements, the energy is tangible and raw. The music is made by College Park, for College Park and the listeners feel that; but the message and appeal is universal.

Come check out the first club performance of “College Spark” at Milkboy Studios on 4/20.
