Computer security advice is everywhere: how to make a good password, how to avoid phishing emails, how to keep your antivirus up to date. In fact, there is more advice than anyone could reasonably follow. But research shows that experts and average users have very different ideas about which advice is useful and worth following.

In this talk, Michelle Mazurek, Assistant Professor, Computer Science and the University of Maryland Institute for Advance Compuster Studies, will discuss where this advice comes from, how people evaluate its trustworthiness, and how to improve the overall security advice landscape. Not to mention, we'll discuss the perennial question of how to choose a good password.
